Rich, creamy and crunchy, these spooky dessert cups are a ghoulishly good Halloween treat. Layers of crushed Oreo, pistachio biscuit crumble, and silky chocolate mousse come together to create a deliciously creepy graveyard scene. Top each one with a gravestone cookie and some edible eyes and you’ve got the perfect sweet for your Halloween party table.
This recipe is part of my Bite Sized Halloween Treats series, where we’ll be creating spooky little snacks that are easy to make, kid-friendly, and just a little bit wicked.
Why you will love this recipe:
Layered textures & flavours | The deep chocolate mousse, nutty pistachio biscuit, and crunchy Oreo base give you something in every spoonful.
Fun and festive | The gravestone cookie and edible eyes make it playful enough for kids and adults alike.
No baking required | These are as simple quick creation that you ca assemble in under 15 minutes. They just need to be chilled before serving.
Ingredients:
This is a simple recipe so uses lots of ingredients that you are likely to already have in your cupboards at home, but there may be a couple of specific seasonal extras you need.
150 g crushed Oreo cookies (for the “soil”) – Their dark chocolate colour and crumbly texture make the perfect edible dirt base and give a satisfying crunch.
Pistachio cream – Adds a beautiful green pop of colour and a subtle nutty flavour that contrasts the chocolate layers.
Double cream - Whipped into the chocolate, it gives the mousse a light, airy texture and creamy mouthfeel.
Dark chocolate (70% cocoa) – The main chocolate flavour, giving depth and richness to the mousse layer.
6 gravestone cookies – The spooky centrepiece of the dessert; any rectangular cookie works well for writing “RIP” or drawing gravestone details.
Gummy Eyeballs – Larger and gooier than candy eyeballs, these create a realistic (and deliciously creepy) look for your Halloween treat. I use these ones.
A handful of edible eyes – A playful finishing touch that gives your graveyard a fun, cheeky personality.
6 small clear serving cups or jars – Perfect for showing off the layers and giving everyone their own individual portion.
FAQ’s
Can I make these ahead of time?
Yes! You can assemble the cups up to a day in advance. Keep them covered and stored in the fridge until ready to serve. If you’re adding gravestone cookies, wait to place them in just before serving so they stay crisp.
Can I use instant pudding instead of mousse?
Absolutely. Instant chocolate pudding or chocolate custard works perfectly if you’re short on time, it’ll still give you that deliciously creamy layer.
What can I use instead of pistachio?
If you can’t find or don’t want to use pistachio cream you can try mixing the biscuit crumb with biscoff instead. It won’t give you the ghoulish green colour but it’ll taste delicious caramel twist.
Can I make this dessert nut-free?
Yes. Simply swap the pistachio for a nut-free alternative or omit it entirely.
How long do they last?
These pudding cups will keep well for up to 3 days in the fridge. The texture is best within the first 24 hours, but they’ll still taste great after that, just note that the cookie decorations may soften slightly over time.
Do they need to be refrigerated?
Yes. Because of the mousse and cream components, they should be kept chilled until serving.
Can I make a large “graveyard pudding” instead of individual cups?
Definitely! Layer everything into a large trifle dish or shallow serving bowl instead of individual cups, then decorate the top with gravestones and eyes for a show-stopping centrepiece.
Expert baking tips!
Use clear cups | Transparent cups or jars show off the layered look and make your desserts party-ready.
Don’t overfill | Leave a little space at the top so the gravestone cookie can stand without toppling over.
Add extra spook |Try gummy worms crawling out of the dirt or edible gold shimmer for a ghostly glow.
Personalise the gravestones | Use edible pens or melted chocolate to write names or spooky words.
